Your cat hides under the bed when anyone visits. Or she yowls for 20 minutes straight every time you put her in the carrier. Or she's started overgrooming her belly raw, and the vet says it's stress-related. You've heard CBD might help. It works for dogs, right?

Here's the honest answer: the first controlled study of CBD for cat anxiety found no significant effect. That doesn't mean CBD is useless for anxious cats, but it means the evidence is more complicated than what most guides tell you. What They Did

Cats received a single dose of 4 mg/kg THC-free CBD before two established stressors: transport in a carrier and exposure to a novel person. The researchers measured serum cortisol, salivary IgA, and blood glucose (three objective stress biomarkers) along with behavioral observations.

What They Found

The Result

No significant effect. CBD did not reduce serum cortisol, salivary IgA, or blood glucose levels compared to placebo. The stressors successfully induced measurable stress responses in all cats, confirming the test worked, but CBD did not blunt those responses.

This is a negative result, and it matters. Most CBD-for-cats anxiety guides either ignore this study or don't know it exists. You deserve to see the data, not just the marketing.

Why It Differed from Dogs

The same research team's dog study, Hunt et al. (2023), found that a single dose of 4 mg/kg CBD did significantly reduce cortisol and stress behaviors in dogs during separation and car travel. So why did the same approach fail in cats?

Several factors may explain the species difference:

  • Pharmacokinetic differences. Cats metabolize CBD differently due to limited glucuronidation (see our cat CBD pillar guide for the full explanation). The same dose may produce different blood levels and receptor engagement patterns.
  • Single dose vs. daily dosing. The study tested a single acute dose. Cats may need daily CBD over days or weeks before anxiety effects emerge, similar to how SSRIs in humans require weeks of consistent dosing before reducing anxiety.
  • Stress type matters. Transport stress and novel-person exposure are acute stressors. Chronic anxiety (ongoing separation distress, generalized nervousness, compulsive overgrooming) involves different neurological pathways that may respond differently to cannabinoid modulation.
  • Feline stress expression is different. Cats internalize stress differently than dogs. Behavioral measures validated for dogs may not capture the full picture in cats.

What We Do Know About CBD and Cats

The anxiety data is disappointing, but it doesn't exist in isolation. Other feline CBD research gives us important context.

CBD Is Safe for Cats at Relevant Doses

Coltherd et al. (2024) demonstrated that cats tolerated daily CBD at 4 mg/kg for 26 weeks with no clinically significant adverse effects. Whatever the anxiety outcomes, the safety profile supports trying CBD without significant risk of harm.

CBD Has Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Benefits in Cats

The Coltherd study also reported reduced pain-related behaviors in cats with osteoarthritis. If your cat's anxiety is partly driven by chronic discomfort, which is more common than most owners realize in senior cats, CBD's pain-relieving properties may indirectly reduce anxiety-related behaviors.

The Pharmacokinetics Are Established

Rozental et al. (2023) confirmed dose-proportional CBD pharmacokinetics in cats with peak plasma levels at approximately 2 hours post-administration. We know how cats absorb and process CBD. What we don't yet know is whether consistent daily dosing produces the anxiety reduction that a single dose did not.

Types of Cat Anxiety (and Whether CBD Might Help Each)

Not all feline anxiety is the same, and the likelihood of CBD helping may vary by type.

Separation Anxiety

Signs: excessive vocalization when alone, destructive behavior, inappropriate elimination when the owner leaves, following the owner from room to room.

CBD outlook: Unknown. The Weller study tested transport stress, not separation. Daily CBD at lower doses (0.5–1 mg/kg twice daily) over 2–4 weeks is a reasonable trial approach, but temper expectations. There's no published support for this specific use in cats.

Transport and Carrier Anxiety

Signs: yowling, panting, drooling, urination, or defecation during car travel or carrier confinement.

CBD outlook: Weak. This is exactly what the Weller study tested, and CBD did not reduce stress biomarkers. A single dose before transport does not appear to work in cats the way it does in dogs. Carrier conditioning and Feliway spray are better-evidenced approaches for this type.

Noise Phobia (Fireworks, Thunder)

Signs: hiding, trembling, trying to escape, refusal to eat during or after noise events.

Generalized Anxiety and Compulsive Behaviors

Signs: chronic overgrooming (psychogenic alopecia), excessive hiding, hypervigilance, appetite changes, aggression rooted in fear.

CBD outlook: This is where daily dosing over weeks may have the best chance of helping. Chronic anxiety involves sustained neurological patterns that might respond to consistent ECS modulation, unlike the acute stressor model tested in the Weller study.
