Not Medical Advice
This tool provides general guidance based on published studies. Always consult your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet. Start at the low end and increase gradually over 2 weeks.
How This Calculator Works
Dosing ranges are derived from published veterinary research protocols:
- Dogs — Anxiety: 1.4 mg/kg twice daily (Cornell University, 2022)
- Dogs — Arthritis/Pain: 2 mg/kg twice daily (Cornell University, Gamble et al., 2018)
- Dogs — Seizures: 2.5 mg/kg twice daily (Colorado State University, McGrath et al., 2019)
- Cats: Lower dosing due to different cannabinoid metabolism. Cats lack efficient glucuronidation of CBD. Start at 50% of dog dose equivalent.
- Horses: Weight-adjusted protocols. Limited peer-reviewed data — ranges based on preliminary equine studies and veterinary clinical practice.
Important Dosing Notes
- Start low: Begin at the low end of the range for 1–2 weeks before increasing
- Twice daily: CBD is typically administered every 12 hours for consistent blood levels
- Food matters: Giving CBD with a fatty meal increases bioavailability by up to 2.5×
- Product strength varies: Check the mg/mL concentration on your product’s COA, not just the bottle label
- Drug interactions: CBD inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes. If your pet takes other medications, consult your vet about interactions
